The Right Choice

Last week’s article talked about using this time of year to review your goals.  Have you figured out how you are going to meet your fitness goals?

Do you know what your options are?

There is a variety of Group Fitness classes offered through the Chestermere Recreation Centre, at the local gyms and there are also many private instructors.  Maybe you are considering a Personal Trainer instead of a group class: both gyms in town have personal trainers on staff and some private trainers as well.  With all of these options, it can be difficult to know how to pick the right one.

Whether it is a class or one-on-one training you are looking at, trainers have the same end goal:  to help you meet your fitness goals most effectively.  Each trainer has a tool kit of knowledge and experience to help you get fit and be healthy some of which can be very similar.

So if most trainers have the same end goal and similar methodologies how do you possible make the right choice?

First of all, in most cases there is no wrong choice.  It is what makes the most sense for you and your needs.

Consider the trainer’s background, experience and credentials.  Your trainer should have a reputable certification or degree.  To become certified, personal trainers and group fitness instructors must pass an exam through an accredited organization and must complete upgrades each year to maintain their certification and stay current on the latest fitness trends.

For your protection, ensure your trainer has liability insurance and is certified in First Aid and CPR.  Of course, no one wants to think about accidents but they do happen.  There are inherent risks with training and you need to ensure you will be looked after in the event of a mishap.

Delivery is a huge component to consider when choosing a class.  Each instructor has their own style: the military drill sergeant, technical, instructional, energetic, and fun just to name a few common styles you may see.   Ask if you can check out a class before you commit.  Don’t be surprised if you aren’t allowed to sit on the sidelines.  Some instructors (me included) don’t allow spectators but are happy to let you come try out a class.

Compatibility is key when choosing a personal trainer.  A trainer’s philosophy about fitness should fit with your own.  When working one-on-one with a trainer you will be spending a lot of time with this person and be required to share a lot about yourself, your body and maybe some insecurities or challenges.  Plan to meet with the trainer before signing up and ask yourself if you will be comfortable working, and sharing, with this person.  Consider how the trainer will help keep you motivated.  As with group fitness instructors, trainers will have different styles; think about what style would motivate you the best.

Check references and recommendations.  Ask the instructor or personal trainer if they can provide references.  Word of mouth is also important, especially in our small town.  Remember your goals may differ from those providing the recommendation.

With all of the options available it can be difficult to know which class or trainer to pick.  Do you homework.  Ask questions, try a class, and meet with the trainer to find the right fit for you.
