Turn Up the Music

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor has got to be one of my favorite songs when working out. I have the song on a couple of my workout playlists. It doesn’t matter if I am at the beginning of my workout or at the end with very little energy when this song comes on, my iPod is cranked up and my workout is taken to a new level.

I have been in a bit of a funk the last couple of days. I have been using every excuse to avoid my workouts. I have had the time just not the energy and with the cold weather I just want to stay in and hibernate. Yes, that’s my excuse: it is just too cold to workout.

I have all that I need at home for a workout, I don’t need to go out in the cold to get it done but I just couldn’t seem to muster the energy, or the willpower.

In an effort to break free from this funk I literally forced myself into the gym earlier this week. I was already out, already cold, gym bag in the back seat and driving right by the gym. There were no excuses.

I was hopeful that once I got inside maybe I would find the energy or the motivation or at the very least I would go through the motions. Even if it wasn’t a great workout at least I did something, right?!?

I started with a little cardio. It wasn’t working for me. I instructed a class earlier that day and lacked the energy for cardio and well that’s probably just another excuse too. I just didn’t have it in me.

I moved over to the weights. I had a plan that I would be taking one of my classes through later in the week with me and thought I could run through that on my own. Halfway through the plan I concluded it just wasn’t a great plan. Into the garbage that one would go and I would have to come up with another one for the class. I was just about to clean up and head home when the song that was playing ended and up next came Eye of the Tiger…

When I had gotten to the gym I had grabbed my iPod and thrown in my ear buds and lacking any inspiration just put the current playlist on shuffle. I have no idea what was playing prior. I don’t think I was really listening. It was just playing in the background of all the whining going through my head.

With Eye of the Tiger now playing, and the volume now cranked, my mood immediately lifted. The weight plan that was destined for the trash was once again in front of me. My usual weights were replaced with heavier weights and by the time the song ended for the second time I had a sweat pouring off my face and found the motivation I was lacking.

Do you have a song that gets you moving? Is there a song that puts a smile on your face no matter what your mood? Figure out what your Eye of the Tiger is add it to your playlists, turn it up loud and get moving.
