Division 4 Report September

It is a pleasure to be writing in the inaugural edition of the new Langdon Paper, I will try to come up with some interesting information for every edition and I wish the publisher every success as they provide this valuable service to the Residents of our Hamlet.

In case you are new to Langdon, aren’t on Facebook, weren’t here for the election in 2010 or the last election in 2013, don’t read the Rocky View Weekly or didn’t buy a 50/50 ticket at the last Langdon Days, let me introduce myself. I am Rolly Ashdown, your Councillor in Division 4 of Rocky View County, basically the area of the County that is South of Glenmore trail for the west part and South of the number one highway on the East part. Langdon is a Hamlet and the largest community in Division 4.

Rocky View County, which we are part of, surrounds Calgary on the East, North and West and runs from Langdon on the East to North of Crossfield to Bragg Creek on the West side. Langdon is the third largest Hamlet in the Province behind Ft.Mc Murray, which is in the MD of Wood Buffalo and Sherwood Park which is in Strathcona County. Some of the other Hamlets in Rocky View County are Bragg Creek, Cochrane Lake, Madden, Conrich, Dalemead, Dalroy, Indus, Kathyrn, and Keoma. Langdon is unique in that it has grown from 2,600 in 2006 to near 5,000 in 2013.

A Hamlet is an unincorporated community. The idea of a Hamlet is that it uses the Governance and Administration of the County it is in instead of having it’s own Council and Administration. The advantage to being part of a reasonably large and very diversified County like Rocky View is that we become part of a larger entity and are not restricted to only our own Residential tax base or services but we share the resources of the larger area. It does put a little more responsibility on the Residents since there is no City-style organization, some would say that it is what gives Langdon it’s charm and small town rural feel. I guess the only negative could be that you are stuck with me as your only Municipal Government dude instead of a Council of 5 or so, and another group of Administrators just for us. It seems to be working so far; I can get into it a little deeper another day.

So best of luck to the new paper, may you have good news for Langdon in every issue.

I can be reached on the phone at 403-999-2722 cell or 403-936-0777 at home and if you have any County issues please email me at rashdown@rockyview.ca.

Rolly Ashdown,
Division 4 Councillor
Rocky View County
