Every November 11th in most countries, the day is dedicated to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” and it is at that time that ceremonies are held to pause and remember those men and women who lost their lives.
As students are not in school on Remembrance Day, November 10th had the students at Sarah Thompson School paying a special tribute to those that have served our country and those that continue to do so.
Beautiful poems were read and emotional musical numbers played as the students proudly stood, with poppies on, to show that even at their young age, they understand why we participate in Remembrance Day and the meaning of the poppy.
A special presentation had students, accompanied by a teacher, place poppies onto the wreaths that laid at the front of the gym. The end of the assembly had a moving shadow dance that portrayed the life of a solider that leaves and goes to war. The love, the tears and the sacrifice that men and women still go through as they make the decision to stand and protect those that can’t defend themselves.
The students at Sarah Thompson School did a remarkable job showing why we stop to remember and that we as Canadians are so grateful for those that have served and those that continue to serve
