The Board of Trustees acts as the political arm of the district. This means that the trustees are advocates at the provincial and local levels to support our students.
How we advocate:
• Building positive, collaborative relationships with our provincial and municipal government. These relationships are key to our ability to effectively advocate for the needs of our students. Over the past several months, the board has been building a strong relationship with the NDP government, the Education Minister and all of the MLAs for our Calgary Catholic School District. The board works on behalf of the district and the community and is currently involved in important conversations around funding, infrastructure, meeting the needs of complex learners and legislation.
• Partnerships with educational partners. Educational partners are also a key component of being able to effectively advocate for students and education. At the provincial level, we work with the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), which represents the 61 boards in the province to define and support provincial advocacy priorities. We also work with the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Association (ACSTA) representing the 23 Catholic school boards in the province.
• The Metro School Boards Group. This is a partnership with the Calgary Board of Education, Edmonton Public School Board and Edmonton Catholic School Board. It is an important collaboration that allows us to work together to understand and support the unique needs of students in large metro areas.
Advocacy is all about working for our public. Our priority is ensuring that our students have the best possible educational opportunities. “Success for all students” is our academic theme and it’s what guides us through our advocacy work.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year!
