Chestermere Flood Response – Chestermere submits application to Disaster Recovery Program

Chestermere, AB – Chestermere Emergency Management staff have submitted the City’s initial application to the Provincial Disaster Recovery Program. However, the City is still requesting that any flood impacted residents report their damage as soon as possible to ensure the full extent of the damage can be conveyed to the province.

“We are pleased to be moving forward to pursue provincial funding assistance for our residents,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews. “The flooding that took place in July impacted our community deeply and though Chestermereians are extraordinarily resilient, we are doing everything we can to support them through the recovery process.”

Approximately 130 residents attended a Council flood report at the Municipal Office on Wednesday, August 19 to hear what the City had been doing on their behalf since the floods. Staff from the Disaster Recovery Program were on hand at that meeting and able to answer some questions from residents about the program.

More information will be made available to Chestermere residents about a potential DRP program for the City once the province reviews the application.

Shortly following the flooding, Mayor Matthews and members of Council met with the Minister and Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs to discuss the flood damage and recovery process. Today, elected officials met with Chestermere MLA Leela Aheer and Wildrose Party Leader Brian Jean to review the impact of the flooding in Chestermere.

“We are very pleased with the support we have received from elected officials and DRP staff,” said Mayor Matthews. “We look forward to working collaboratively with everyone involved to find solutions for those affected in Chestermere.”

A summary of Council’s report to the community that outlines the flood recovery work of City staff and officials can be found at www.chestermere.ca/alerts.

Residents who have not yet reported their flood damage are encouraged to email flood@chestermere.ca with their name, address, and description of damage.
