Community Mental Health and Wellness Supports Come Together for Exam Time

Exams are in full motion in as high school students are studying for their semester finals and provincial diploma exams. At Chestermere High School, the theatre stage was transformed into the Relaxation Room, from January 13 – 15. Students were able to access this space to take care of their mental health, hang out and re-fuel for the next day. Coordinated by Stepping Stones to Mental Health Success Coach, Danielle Fermin, activities and workshops were set in place for students to take advantage of in helping them relax and take their minds off of the hectic nature exam time can bring.

Students were treated to a drop-in Yang/Yin session, guided by Bonnie Harvey from Inner Focus Yoga. During this time, students meditated, stretched, breathed, and laughed as they tried their very best to do a headstand in the 90 minute session. This was a wonderful opportunity for students participate in a physical activity, where they learned how to cope with exam stress, improve their concentration, and act without judgement. Bonnie encouraged the students to let go of all the tension and stress that built up in their bodies throughout the day, and to focus on their breath. At the end of the session, students left with a clearer mind and a smile on all their faces.

Chestermere Therapy Dogs made their first debut visiting Chestermere High School, as guests of the Relaxation Room. Many students were excited to meet therapy dogs, Bella the Bishon Shitzu and Chilli the English Bulldog. It was amazing to witness the impact animals have on students and the natural relationship that was built in seconds. There were even a few instances were students debated going to their mandatory classes, as they wanted to spend time with the therapy dogs. Pet therapy was brought in because of its many benefits in supporting students’ mental health: lowers anxiety, provides comfort, reduces boredom, increases socialization, and encourages communication.

Additional activities and workshops included: teatime, board games, movies, music, a snack table, and a Test Anxiety and Study Skills workshop. As the Relaxation Room wrapped up, many students were expressing their gratitude for having guests from Chestermere Therapy Dogs and Bonnie from Inner Focus Yoga supporting them during this time of the school year. Stepping Stones would like to share our appreciation and acknowledge Steve King (President of Chestermere Therapy Dogs) and Chestermere High School (Guidance Team, Music Director, and Administration) for supporting and partnering on this program.
