Canada Day is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as among Canadians internationally….and here in Chestermere, it’s no different.
The City of Chestermere hosted another amazing Canada Day Celebration, despite the chilly start to the day, the event brought out large crowds from Chestermere and surrounding area. The day started with Mayor Patricia Matthews and members of City Council serving up a pancake breakfast.
The day was filled with performances on the Pavilion Stage in John Peake Park by the Keister Family Fiddlers, Minerva, Indigenous Dance Studio, Carolina Portilla, Zhaoli Dance School, Lisa Anderson & Max McFayden, Blues Walk, Bachata con Cache, More Salsa – Melissa Posadas and DJ Mendoza.
There were old fashioned kid’s games and races which included a tug of war and egg toss. Paul’s Wagon Rides were on hand to give wagon rides along the lake and the library parking lot was full of different local vendors and organizations. Chestermere Public Library held a used book sale and was also serving up birthday cake to help celebrate the birthday of our great county. Members of Chestermere Fire Service and RCMP came out to join in the celebrations as well.
The evening was filled with dancing as Latin dance lessons were offered and also the Salsa on the Lake and social dance where proceeds were donated to the Senhoa Foundation Charity.
A Canada Day celebration just wouldn’t be a proper celebration without fireworks and the Chestermere fireworks are always a crowd favourite. Families, friends and neighbours filled John Peake Park, Anniversary Park and even took to the lake to watch this spectacular show from their boats.
Nancie Huneault, Events Coordinator with the City of Chestermere, said “Canada Day in Chestermere is truly a community event. Each year residents come out and celebrate as families our nations birthday. It really is fantastic to see! Despite the high winds earlier in the day, we had another great turn out for this year’s festivities. By end of the day we had picture perfect conditions for our fabulous fireworks! Thank you to all who came out and celebrated!”
Happy Birthday Canada!
