The Langdon Community Association (LCA) is excited to once again invite community members to participate in their Adopt –a-Planter Program and Contest.
“We welcome any individual, family, organization or business to get involved. We already have a number of planters spoken for because there is a lot of people who really look forward to this initiative” said Colette Curkan, Beautification Coordinator for the LCA. “The contest is a lot of fun and can get pretty competitive with some people really doing a fantastic job designing and planting their container.”
The 29 large planters are located down mainstreet and throughout the hamlet in parks and other public areas. Although the budget is small, each planter is given a modest amount of plants to get them started but Curkan explains that there are no barriers or limits to what type of plants you can put in your planter. “We encourage the participants to get creative and really make it theirs.”
The LCA has always appreciated the public’s support with this program designed to beautify the growing community while creating civic pride and involvement. Therapeutic benefits of gardening are well documented. Gardening can help participants in coping with day to any stressors, it provides an opportunity to increase their level of physical activity and assists participants in feeling connected to their environment.
Near the end of the season the LCA Board will vote on the nicest planters and winners will receive prizes donated by Garden Scents Garden Centre. “Candace and Wade from Garden Scents have been really supportive of the program and have even offered to help participants design and plan their planters.”
Participants not only get the opportunity to design and plant the large flowerpots but they are also responsible for maintaining and watering it throughout the growing season. Curkan and her family have been involved in the fun program for a number of years, not only as a volunteers planning the event but they have also adopted a planter for at least 4 years. “I enjoy gardening with my kids because there’s something really great about working outside in the dirt to make things beautiful.”
There are still planters available for those who wish to get involved in the contest as well as contributing to making Langdon a beautiful place to live, work and play.
In past years the LCA has pursued corporate sponsorship to fund the Adopt-a-Planter Program but with local businesses getting hit up for so many donations, they have decided to try to fund it entirely through a small budget granted to them.
