Community Engagement

At the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), the Board of Trustees considers community engagement to be one of our top priorities. As trustees, our role is to lead with inclusion; to understand the needs of our community; to be informed in our decision making; and to serve our stakeholders by providing an opportunity for success for each and every one of our students.
What is school council?
School council is a meaningful way that parents can get involved with their school community, share their views on important issues and work together towards common goals. All parents with children attending school are members of their local school council. School councils are made up of parents, principals and teacher representatives who meet throughout the school year.
Why should I get involved?
Parental involvement in education is proven to improve student success. School council provides a forum for parental input into education at the school, district and provincial level. At CCSD we believe that parents, as primary educators of their children, have a right and responsibility to participate fully in the educational process. CCSD encourages councils to increase their advisory role in schools with consultation on matters such as student achievement results, the school’s Three Year-Plan and ways that school culture may be enhanced.

How do school councils work with the Board of Trustees?

School councils are an important communication link to the Board of Trustees. We rely on school councils to bring perspectives about education, an individual school’s needs and community concerns. The Board of Trustees firmly believes that each parent in our schools brings a distinct voice and representation to the dialogue concerning children’s education. In addition to attending school council meetings by invitation, trustees also meet with school council members and parents at Parent Trustee Forums.
How do I get involved?
Contact your child’s school principal to get involved. We also have information available on our website at http://www.cssd.ab.ca/parents/school-council/. The Annual School Council Chair and Trustee General Meeting will be held on October 8, 2015 and Parent and Trustee Forums are held in November, January and March of every year.
