The City of Chestermere would like to invite all residents to attend the dedication of Chestermere’s new cenotaph on November 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Anniversary Park.
Chestermere’s new cenotaph was completed earlier this year and will serve as a permanent place in our community to honour all who have given their lives in service of our country.
We are delighted that Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, CM, AOE, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta will be joining us for the dedication.
We are very honoured to have Her Honour here in Chestermere for the dedication,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews. “Dedicated volunteers worked very hard to bring the cenotaph to our community and it will make every Remembrance Day ceremony from this year forward, that much more special.”
The beautiful cenotaph, designed by retired RCMP Officer Richard Hessler, honours the Canadians who fought for our country and make our freedom possible. Emblems of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services are displayed, as well as the images of those who fought in wars and peacekeeping operations.
The City of Chestermere would like to thank the Cenotaph Committee members for their hard work and commitment to make this Cenotaph possible. Ray Hessler, a local veteran and the founder of the Chestermere Cenotaph Committee, spearheaded the initial idea and helped bring this project to life.
“We saw outstanding support and turnout of the people of Chestermere during the planning of the cenotaph,” said Stu Hutchison, a City Councillor and member of the Cenotaph Committee.
Chestermere residents and surrounding communities will gather to remember and honour those who serve at the Cenotaph dedication and at the traditional Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11. Any veterans who wish to do so may also participate in a ceremonial march to the new Cenotaph for the Remembrance Day Service.
