Saturday June 6th was the perfect day for a BBQ…an even better day for a charity BBQ in support of preserving a piece of Chestermere’s history. M & M Meats held a charity BBQ in support of raising funds to put towards the restoration of the 1952 Ford fire truck that served this community back in the 1960’s and retired in 1981.
Back in the 60’s when Chestermere was just a summer village, the Chestermere Volunteer Fire Department was the only emergency services organization in town. Following the trucks retirement in 1981, it sort of went off the grid for a bit until the Chestermere Historical Foundation purchased it from the Jack Meier estate in 2011.
Since then, the slow and tedious restoration of this Chestermere gem has been in the works. Thanks to volunteers, fundraisers, grants and hard work, the restoration continues.
Members of Chestermere Fire Department were on hand serving up burgers, the Chestermere Lakeside Kruzers will be there for a mini-show-n-shine, members of the Chestermere Historical Foundation were there to give the history of this fire truck of past.
Also a sincere note of appreciation goes out to the others who are supporting the Chestermere Historical Foundation – Safeway, Sobeys, No Frills and Chestermere Fire Department #59.
The lucky winner of the 50/50 draw prize of $137 was Alyssa and the Chestermere Historical Foundation wants to thank all of those that purchased tickets.
