Alberta Fire Statistics Show, the risk of house fires dramatically increases in the month of December, with fire deaths in Alberta increasing by twenty five per cent. Many home fires occurring during the holidays are the result of a combination of risk factors. Busy schedules, decorating, cooking, family and visitors not use to their surroundings can be just a few of many distractions that could cause a fire in your home. The Chestermere Fire Services wants to remind everyone a few fire prevention tips to help avoid fires over the winter months.
Residents can reduce the risk of fire in their homes dramatically by having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Detectors provide early warning of fires, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors can double a family’s chance of escaping from a fire.
Check your smoke detectors monthly. Replace the batteries in smoke detectors twice a year (every time you change your clocks). Install battery operated smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home. Sleep with doors closed this will stop the travel of smoke.
Make an escape plan and test it at least twice per year one in the day time and one in the night. Include everyone in the family including the pets in your drill. Install a carbon monoxide detector should be installed if you have any appliance with a flame, including stoves, ovens, water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces. Do not use your stove or oven to heat the house at any time, space heaters could be very dangers and should never be left unattended as they ca be knocked over by a pet very easily.
