It was a wonderful weekend for Chestermere as we commemorated our new designation as a city. I was happy to join in on the celebrations with Council and the community at our annual Winterfest. I was happy to take my annual splash into the frozen waters as part of the Polar Bear Dip to help raise money for Youth Encouraging Lasting Leadership (YELL).
Chestermere has been a summer village, a town, and now, a city. Through all the municipal status changes, it’s the people that have made this community great. Alberta Municipal Affairs was pleased to grant Chestermere’s request to become a city and the transition is a sign, and something that those of us who live here already know, that we are a community of growth, promise, and opportunity.
Chestermere has always had an engaging sense of community. Over the years, we’ve always been able to rely on the support of our families, our friends and our neighbours. We have shared in each other’s successes and our challenges. Not because we have to, but because it’s just what good neighbours do.
I am so proud that I have been able to call this community home since 2004. Lisa and I are raising our family here. Over the past 11 years, I’ve watched our community grow and evolve into the city it is today. While we have changed our descriptive title from summer village, to town, to city, the title does not define who we are as people. It is the strength in community that make us unique and special.
I’m confident the strong sense of community will remain in Chestermere for years to come. We have a proud past and a bright future. Let’s enjoy this milestone of becoming Alberta’s 18th city.
