During the seriousness of the Provincial Election, a campaign sign competition is sure to lighten things up

In less than 30 minutes from the Provincial Election being called, Chestermere became littered with campaign signs.  Intersections, fences, boulevards, businesses and residential yards have become one tool used by running candidates as a way to spread the word and get their face out there.  Some residents don’t mind the signs and proudly display a yard sign for the candidate they support, while other residents are outraged at the amount of signage popping up all over our city.

One local man has decided to put a fun spin on the campaign signage issue by launching a campaign sign competition.  Chestermere resident, Tommy Fleger, has organized a campaign sign competition to go from now until Election Day.  When asked how this competition came to life, Fleger stated, “With record low voter turnout projected for the election, Coral Bliss Taylor, Green Party of Alberta candidate for Chestermere-Rocky View, feels a campaign sign-making contest would be an effective and fun way to engage the community, decrease voter apathy and celebrate democracy”.  It is important to note that at the time of this article be written, Taylor has submitted her application to Alberta Elections but is not yet a confirmed candidate.

This competition is open to all ages and is not party specific.  People are encouraged to make a sign for whichever candidate they support, or just about an issue that is important to them. “It could even be just something small and simple such as a sign that says “Vote!” sticking in a planter or hanging on the door”, says Fleger.

The rules are simple, make a sign.  Try upcycling something that was going to get tossed anyways.  Post it on your property.  Take a Picture of it.  Email it to crvotes@gmail.com along with your contact info.  They will post sign pictures on their Facebook page, and tweet them.  You can until Election Day to get your entries in. The winner is chosen by random draw.

Tommy Fleger has donated one of his art chairs, Reworks upcycle shop gave a $30 gift certificate for their store in Inglewood, Julie Rintoul donated five $20 gift certificates to the General Store, and John Kittler kicked in a $25 gift certificate and two rentals for two participants at the Hyperactive Marina.  With prizes like this, you won’t want to miss out!

The competition organizers will keep adding prizes up until the election, so if anyone would like to donate a prize, please contact them at crvotes@gmail.com.  They will be updating the prize list at coral4chestermere-rockyview.ca/contest-prizes so participants can keep track of what’s up for grabs.

  • Thanks for this article, Michelle! Happy to report that just after this was written, I was actually the first confirmed candidate in the area. Please also note that my surname is “Bliss Taylor”.
