Keeping our children safe is the highest priority of a parent and in the beginning years, while they are mostly in our care, it’s easy to keep them safe. To be able to control what they play with, what they get in to and where they are. But when they are out of the home, whether playing outside or attending school, there is a certain anxiety that almost every parent experiences. That fear of wondering if you’ve taught them everything they need to know about how to deal with outside situations….and if they’ll remember to do them.
For as much as we as parents want to keep our children safe, the men and women of Chestermere Protective Services do as well. On Thursday June 4th, Peace Officer K. Hourie and two members of Chestermere Fire Service were on hand to teach the kindergarten students of Rainbow Creek Elementary some fire and road safety.
Peace Officer Hourie gave the children a step by step lesson on how to properly cross the street. Important things such as using a cross walk, looking both ways and holding out your hand when crossing were just a few of the potentially lifesaving tips shared with the young students.
The firefighters covered such topics as how to be safe around fire, not to play with matches and what to do should a fire start. The CFS members showed the students the gear they wear and also explaining what the use of all the gear is.
Then the students had the chance to check out both the fire truck and also the Peace Officers vehicle. Getting to sit inside, seeing the important but also pretty cool aspects of the vehicles and even getting to flip on the lights and sirens….no doubt the highlight of the day for these youngsters.
