Chestermere Seniors Week 2016

A weeklong celebration to honor our 55+

The 55+ members of our community and surrounding area could tell you some amazing stories of our history and how we got to where we are. So, it only seems fitting that we show them the appreciation and respect that they deserve.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Seniors’ Week in Alberta and the 2016 Seniors Week Committee has this message. “Enjoy a week of invigorating activities, energizing events and inspiring workshops throughout the City of Chestermere and Area. Being active is good for your mind and body, as well as adding years to your life and life to your years. Taking the plunge will take a bit of effort so get involved, come out join in on the fun”.

June 6th to 12th will be a flurry of activity around Chestermere as a powerhouse of groups has come together to celebrate our seniors. Those supporters include The Chestermere Public Library, Primary Care Network, Community Services, the Rotary Club of Chestermere, Prince of Peace Manor & Harbour, the Chestermere Recreation Centre, the Chestermere Lions Club, Camp Chestermere, Chestermere Whitecappers, Alberta Health Services, Leela Sharon Aheer MLA and the Chestermere Anchor City News.

This busy week has over forty activities events and workshops that touch on the physical and emotional aspects of life. It all kicks off on Monday June 6th with a kick-off lunch at Camp Chestermere.

Some of the workshops of the week consist of a June 7th session about the five different programs Calgary Meals on Wheels offers to individuals, families and community groups. June 8th has a gentle yoga session where Elann Anderson, certified yoga instructor, will lead participants through yoga poses in this gentle class. June 10th will hold an E-Prep workshop where attendees will learn how to prepare for an emergency. The topic of living with diabetes is a two-part workshop that will take place on June 7th and 10th and will look at an overview of diabetes, nutrition and physical activity and self-management.

Other activities include: cribbage and euchre tournaments, floor shuffleboard, carpet bowling, bocce, pickle ball, quilting, games night and a slo-pitch tournament.

The week will then wrap up with a Picnic in the Park on Sunday June 12th from 11am – 1:30pm in John Peake Park (north of the gazebo) for seniors with their families and friends.
