Since 1867, July first has been a day that is nationally celebrated as Canada’s birthday. Originally called Dominion Day, this day is celebrated from coast to coast as a day to come together as communities and show our Canadian pride. In 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed, this holiday was officially renamed Canada Day, and those that call Canada home have been celebrating it ever since.
As every year, the City of Chestermere organized a huge Canada Day celebration at John Peake Park. Kicking off at 9am with a pancake breakfast served up by members of city of council and other city staff, the crowds came early and stayed late for this fun filled day.
There was live entertainment at the gazebo all day that consisted of:
Keister Family Fiddlers
Indigenous Dance Studio
Kristyn Johnson
Generation Country
Akesh Aheer
Minerva
Calgary Dance Express
Zhaoli Dance School
Oliver Miguel and Band
Las Bravas – Latin Dance Performance
Following these talented performers, the gazebo filled with dancers for the Salsa at the Lake event where one could get a quick Latin dance lesson and then dance the night away.
The Chestermere Food Bank was on hand throughout the day accepting donations for the Fort McMurray residents affected by the wildfires as Chestermere continue to gives back to those in need.
Aside from the amazing entertainment, the day was jam packed of fun and exciting games and activities for all ages. Bunny races, old fashion games and races, wagon rides, and much more.
The Chestermere Public Library served up birthday cake in the afternoon and that’s also where you could find a trading post of vendors selling a variety of things.
If you were hungry at this event, there was no shortage of food. Food trucks lined the parking lot of John Peake Park to serve up delicious treats to keep guests with full tummies.
And whether you stuck it all day or took a break and came back, the big finale was the fireworks display. With threatening storms circling the city, Mother Nature added her own light show along with the amazing fireworks display that is always a favourite to residents and those that attend.
Looking forward to celebrating your 150th next year Canada!
