The second annual Lakeridge community soap box derby will be held Sept. 11 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Rainbow Falls Link.
“People come and line the streets and cheer the kids on…we make it a big deal,” said Lakeridge Community Church Pastor Preston Pouteaux.
Registration for the race is $20 and will be accepted until racing starts on Sunday.
Racers can bring their own car or they can use one of the cars provided free at the derby. All participants are required to bring their own helmet.
“We just want to make the kids feel they’re in the biggest race of their lives,” he said.
New this year is the crazy car category. Anything on wheels that is safe and doesn’t have an engine can be entered.
“Anybody who thinks they can race a sofa with wheels down or an old bathtub…pretty much anybody can enter some downhill racing contraption,” said Pouteaux.
He said that the goal of the race is to have a fun and inclusive community event. With that in mind, anyone who can’t afford to participate because of the economic downturn will have their entree fee waived.
“We really want everybody who wants to race to race,” said Pouteaux.
