1975-chestermere

Many of you have seen the beautiful reproduction of this photo in the General Store. The Chestermere Historical Foundation greatly appreciates the effort taken by local businesses such as The General Store, Alberta Treasury Branch (Patricia Virk), Tim Hortons ( Andrew Marriott) and others such as Dr. Jed Snatic who have embraced the history of Chestermere using photos and other art work to celebrate our irrigation, railway, and farming past.
What did Chestermere look like back in 1975? — not all THAT long ago in our city’s history. This photo was just before Chestermere became a Summer Village in 1977. It was taken by Peter Jenkins and published in The Calgary Herald, and later used with permission in the inside front cover of ‘Chestermere a Home for All Seasons’. Sadly, the publisher cropped the right side of the photo, and if you compare this with the book, you will see some features on the east side of the Lake are missing in the book.
Can you find these landmarks? The market garden greenhouse? The pond bordered by the original road across the lake, that is now ‘Founders Point’? Can you find the old Chestermere Hall and what looks to be a racetrack or maybe a gymkhana grounds? The provincial campground? Camp Chestermere? Lake Ere Estates? The only Chestermere store owned by Joel and Angus Durand where boaters could buy boat gas and ice cream, and the little boathouse? To check your answers go to www.chestermerehistory.org
2015 saw the introduction several new CHF initiatives; interviewing local citizens for an oral history of Chestermere; library displays of historical items; talks on Chestermere’s history; and publishing online stories of Chestermere. CHF is seeking more citizens to be part of these initiatives. Would you be interested? If so, please join us at our meeting 6:30pm April 8th at the library OR contact us through the webpage if you have questions and might like to be part of documenting Chestermere’s history.
