JV BOYS BASKETBALL
The JV Boys participated in the Strathmore Spartan JV tournament this weekend. After a tough 3-point loss to Olds in the first game, and a victory over Acme in the second game, the boys lost a 5 point game to St. Joes in the Consolation title game. This week the boys will wrap up the regular season play with a game against Bert Church that will impact seeding going into the playoffs.
CURLING
Chestermere High School hosted the South Central Zone Curling Championships this past weekend. Twenty teams from seven different leagues participated in the bonspiel.. After playing through the round robin, and a tie breaker game, the Chestermere High boys team, which consisted of skip Evan Shields, 3rd Brian Hamel, 2nd Jordan Faucher and lead Ryan Wolff, won the Silver Medal. The girls team of Jocelyn Baxter, Emma Gingras, Daityn Lohr , Kate Lloyd and the mixed team of Kyle Mercier, Emily Persaud, Amritpal Saini, Nichole Storvold and Steve Burness also participated but didn’t advance to the medal round. Thanks To Coaches Bremer, Sutcliffe, and Janke as well as Ms. Everson for their work hosting this event.
WRESTLING
Congratulations to Ford Witt who continued his winning ways, this past weekend, earning a victory at the Churchill Classic, in Calgary. Ford moved up to the 59 kg category, where he had 13 wrestlers in his pool. He had two easy victories and then had a very tough semi-final match, where he scored two pints in the last few seconds to earn the victory. In the fin al he dominated winning 10-0. Ford is working hard to prepare for Provincials, where he is the defending rural and overall Provincial Champion.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Varsity Lady Lakers were in the high profile Western Canada RIT this weekend. Their first game was against Bishop Carroll who is a strong team in the Calgary league. The Lady Lakers did not have their best performance and lost by 12. Cole Isbister was player of the game and Kasey Haasen was high scorers with 10 points. The team bounced back the next game against St. Mary’s and won 71-46. Olivia Armstrong was player of the game hitting 4 threes and Kasey Haasen had 20 points for the Lady Lakers. The consolation final was against William Aberhart with the Lady Lakers battling to a 58-42 victory. Sam Bec was player of the game and Camren Longstaff had a double double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. The team plays a league game, at home, against Bert Church on Wednesday, at 6:00.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
The JV Girls had another successful weekend of basketball. The Lady Lakers travelled to Hanna to participate in the annual Hanna Sweetheart Tournament. This was a high school varsity tournament and the Lady Lakers were the only JV team participating. The girls won three out of their four games, earning the “C” Championship. Playing against high school competition was very good for the girls as they had to work hard to win all three games. Players of the Game awards went to Paige Grabmuller, Morgan Wakeford, Shae Doughty and Jenna Merhi. Congratulations to the girls on a very strong weekend of basketball. This week the team travels to Springbank, on Tuesday, and hosts Bert Church, on Wednesday, in their final two league games of the season. The girls look forward to hosting the 34th annual Chestermere Invitational on February 23-25.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Varsity Lakers won their league game last week against Springbank 61-51. This week they travel to Bert Church, on Tuesday, to close out their league season.
