Thinking about Running for Council?

2017 Municipal Election Coming Soon

Chestermere, AB – In only several weeks, Chestermere residents will choose who will lead this City for the next four years by voting in the municipal election.

“Serving on City Council is one of the most effective ways to make a significant impact in a community and we encourage anyone interested in the position to submit their name as a candidate,” said Tracy Buteau, Interim CAO for the City of Chestermere.

For those who haven’t yet decided whether or not they should run, the City is offering a variety of resources that provide information about the role and election process. Interested residents are welcome to pick up an information package at City Hall, attend a candidate information workshop or connect with the Returning Officer, Susan McMahon.

Residents who have decided that they will run for Council must submit a completed Nomination Form containing 10 signatures from eligible electors, a Contact Information Form and a deposit of $250 to the Returning Officer on September 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at City Hall.

The City currently has 13 individuals registered as prospective candidates which allows them to accept campaign contributions before Nomination Day. Whether pre-registered or not, nominees are not considered official candidates until their papers have been accepted on Nomination Day.

Once the Nomination Day papers have been compiled, the City will release the list of candidates and the campaign season will officially begin. Information for voters, including dates of forums and voter eligibility, is available on the City’s election website.

The election will conclude with voters selecting one Mayor and six Councillors through voting taking place on Saturday October 7, Saturday October 14 or Monday October 16. No special reasons are required to vote on advance voting days.
