It has been a very busy week, with most of our teams in action.
JV GIRLS VOLLEYBALL WIN W.H. CROXFORD TOURNAMENT
It was a busy week for the JV Girls team as they played their first league game on Wednesday night, as well as their first tournament in Airdrie on the weekend. The girls were able to defeat the Beiseker in three close sets. The team then went on to play extremely well over the weekend at the W.H. Croxford tournament beating out Holy Trinity in the final. The girls won all 7 of their games and didn’t lose a single set. Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the Lakers went to setter Brooke Young. The Lakers will be playing in Airdrie again on Wednesday night for their league game against W.H. Croxford. Good luck girls.
GOLF
Last Wednesday CHS hosted the South Central Zone Championship held at the Strathmore Golf Club. The Lakers were successful with the team of Mason Corbiell, Tyler Gingras, Cole Ross and Jesse Rinehart placing second with a combined score of 246. Springbank took first place with a combined score of 210. The real fight was for second place. Although 2nd as a team wasn’t good enough to qualify for provincials as a team, Mason Corbiell shot a 77 to qualify as an individual and will represent Chestermere at the ASAA Provincial High School Championship September 24 and 25 at Springbank Golf Club. Good Luck Mason.
GIRLS SOCCER
The Lakers had an outstanding week, winning one game and tying the other. They defeated George McDougall 6-0 with goals coming from Malak Geha, Lindey Pribyl, Emily Baker, Sharnae Sedres and two by Rachelle Faucher. The team had a 2-2 tie with the always tough Springbank Phoenix. Both goals were scored by Jacy Hingley. The girls are currently tied for first in the Rocky View League. They will get tested this week as they take on the defending champions, Cochrane Cobras.
SENIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The Senior Girls competed in their second tournament of the season at the W.H. Croxford tournament this past weekend. With very competitive round robin match ups, the Lakers barely secured a spot for the playoffs coming 4th in their pool. This led to the Lakers playing Duchess in the crossover match, winning in three sets and securing a spot in the semi- finals. The girls were up against Crescent Heights and played with confidence and determination, winning the match in two straight sets. Coming up against a dominant Ernest Manning in the finals, the girls battled hard but came up short, receiving the silver medal. Sarah Merkosky received the MVP award for the tournament. She exemplified a strong overall performance, and demonstrated positive leadership skills. The team looks forward to the first league game against the Croxford Cavaliers this Wednesday in Airdrie.
FOOTBALL
The football team had a tough loss to the defending provincial champions, Cochrane Cobras, this past Friday, 55-14. Down 22-0 at the end of the first quarter, the boys could not generate a lot of momentum. They played better the rest of the way but had dug too deep of a hole. The team did some good things in the second half and played hard until the end of the game. Bright spots on defense were Kallum Konschuh, Mitch Tessemaker and Blair Rota. Offensively Dakota Konschuh had a strong game. Dakota had a 65 yard kickoff return to spark the team. Blair Rota picked off a Cobras pass and took it 98 yards for a touchdown. This was the longest “pick six” in team history. This Saturday the boys travel to Bow Valley to take on the Bobcats in league action.
