The Chestermere and Indus Curling Clubs hosted their Annual Combined Modified Mixed Bonspiel on January 26th, 27th, & 28th, 2018. The qualifications to enter were that the Skip and Third must be of opposite genders. There were a variety of team combinations entered, many were true mixed teams while some teams entered with 3 Women and 1 Man and some with 3 Men and 1 Woman. Teams alternated their draws between the two ice rinks, the ice conditions were fantastic at both rinks and the competition was very close with several games going to an extra end. The two clubs have a terrific relationship, and great fun was had by all!
We had one very special entry into our Bonspiel this year…It was the Junior Women’s team from China! Their coach played on their team so that they could meet our Modified Mixed Team rule. This team has been training in Canada for the past two months with 4 hours of practice per day and a bonspiel every weekend. We were honored that they chose our Chestermere/Indus Modified Mixed Bonspiel as one of their training events. Everyone who played against this team found them very enjoyable, even with the slight language barrier and the fact that they beat most of the teams very handily with the exception of their final game which came down to last rock placing them 2nd in the “A” Event.
There were 18 teams vying for the top spot in 4 Events and in the end it was the Carson team that took the “A” Event. Their team consisted of Skip – John Carson, Third – Donna Carson, Second – David Kulcsar and Lead – Robert Schell.
The Lorencz team from Chestermere captured the B Event; Skip – George Lorencz, Third – Deb Davidson, Second – Bob Boschee and Lead – Marj Statler.
The Woronuk team from Chestermere took the C Event; Skip – Nick Woronuk, Third – Marla Forth, Second – Ron Forth and Lead – Sharon Woronuk, and last but not least the winners of the D Event were; Skip – Phil Smith, Third – Michelle Smith, Second – Kyle Iversen and Lead – Heather Blackwell.
