Students consider the impact of technology

St. Gabriel the Archangel grade 7-9 Creative Media students were asked their thoughts on the impact technology has on their personal lives. Below is a short compilation of their responses:

•Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one at sleepovers without a phone. No one is even talking and I don’t have something to look at. This makes me feel like an outsider.

•If I were in public by myself and didn’t have my phone, I would feel vulnerable, awkward and embarrassed because I look like a loner.

•We have a rule at my house about phones. No phones at the dinner table and this applies mostly to my parents.

• There are times when people don’t live in the moment and miss things. My mom takes videos or pictures at every event and looks at the world through a lens. Then it all gets posted on Facebook.

•I am always surrounded by people staring at their screens. It just makes me so confused, like, why is it so hard to have a 2-minute conversation face-to-face?

•My parents are very strict with my phone. I only get to use it on the weekends, not on school days, because my job is to focus on school.

•If I forgot my phone while waiting for someone, I would find something else to do. Maybe people watch!

•I believe more people are becoming addicted to technology because of the entertainment. Smartphones are Parents and teachers try to create rules, but it’s probably going to get worse.

–   I love spending most of my free time online because I am shy in real life. I feel included by my friends when playing online games and I don’t worry about being cool.

         – It’s important to document special times        on our phones. How else can you create memories?

•I spend a lot of time on Snapchat, Facebook, texting, Instagram but I want to change. I want to talk face-to-face with people but it is really hard.
