Fit Togethers’ second annual Family Fitness Festival gave families an opportunity to come out of hibernation mode and participate in a variety of physical activities on March 16.
“We’re celebrating our first birthday, and also showing people how they can incorporate an active lifestyle into their family life,” said Founder of Fit Together Gurjit Toor.
“It went great, we had a really good turnout,” Toor said.
She added, “It was nice to see that people are interested in finding new and exciting ways to incorporate their family into their activities, and their fitness routines.”
Around 70 families participated in a variety of activities inducing, working out in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) circuits, watching equipment demos, or chatting with guest Manjit Minhas from Dragon’s Den.
Children were kept busy by participating their own training session and ended the day by listening to local author Arnold Henry do a book reading.
“They were nice and tried after burning all their energy in the circuits,” Toor said.
She added, parents who participated in the HIIT circuit could still watch their children who were in another area of the gym.
“Everyone could see what everyone was doing, but everyone was in their own safe space. It’s a good way for everyone to be in their own space and get their workout in,” Toor said.
Enabling parents to live healthy active lifestyles has always been extremely motivating for Toor.
Through activities children are working out, and they don’t even notice it, Toor added. She wants children to think of exercising as a normal part of life, not something to do every once in a while.
“It’s always a highlight to me, when I see the interest in people eyes and they say, ‘Oh this is how I can bring my kids to the gym,'” Toor said.
“It’s something that I’m very passionate about. It’s what drives me to do what I do. I want to make sure parents have the opportunities to be active and be role models for their kids. It’s so essential, especially with young children.
“We tend to put fitness on the back burner for ourselves, and the kids grow up not thinking it’s important,” she added.
Without the support from the community, local business owners, and entrepreneurs, giving families the opportunity to have active lifestyles together wouldn’t be possible, Toor said.
“Thank you to the community for the support they have shown us for the first year.
“We’ve been reflecting on a lot of things, and definitely the collaborations we’ve built with other business owners and the support and confidence we get from them is absolutely amazing,” she said.
