Chestermere’s city council recognized the organizers of the Western Canada Pond Hockey Championship for the work done to successful bring the event to Chestermere last month.
Alex Halat and LP Events were awarded a certificate of recognition at the beginning of the Jan. 15 council meeting.
The pond hockey tournament saw 63 teams compete over three days with more than 4000 people attending to take in the three-day tournament.
In a summary of the event presented to council, Halat said that their hope is to continue the championship as an annual event that will shine a spotlight on the city.
Future plans include opening registration to more teams, working to attract teams from across the country, and partnering with local curling and ringette groups to bring those sports to the event as well.
