The Rotary Club of Chestermere donated $500 to the Chestermere Whitecappers Quilters for supplies needed to make quilts for charities.
Charities that will be receiving quilts include the Women’s Shelter, Highfield Society for Unwed Mothers, Colonel Belcher Carewest for Veterans in need, and Chestermere Community Services.
“The Chestermere Whitecapper Quilters do amazing work. They make approximately 50 quilts per year using material that have been donated to them. It’s amazing to watch these ladies put bits and pieces of scraps together to make a beautiful finished quilt,” Karen McKee said.
“The planning, precision, and sheer math that goes into each quilt would likely stump most of us, yet these ladies manage to use every bit of donated material that comes their way,” she added. “Rotary Chestermere really likes to partner with not-for-profit organizations that are already doing good deeds and just need a bit of funds to help them continue their work.”
The Rotary Club of Chestermere donates funds every year to community organizations and global charities.
“This year more than ever charities are finding their donations received have decreased and their applications for assistance have increased, so Rotary Chestermere is stepping up to help where we can,” McKee said.
Adding, “The increase in the amount donated is reflective of COVID-19, but these are organizations that we have supported in the past. We’re just increasing the amounts due to the fact that they have either had to cancel their own fundraiser events or they have not received the usual amount of donations in general.”
The Chestermere Whitecapper Quilters have been making quilts for donation since 2012, and they welcome newcomers to the group.
“They are more than a quilting group, they are also a social group,” McKee said.
