Chestermere has long been celebrated as having one of the most thrilling manhole cover collections between Calgary and Strathmore. Trip Advisor named the Chestermere Manhole Cover Walking Tour as one of the top attractions after “Rustic Rapids” Waterpark. Created by the Chestermere Street Art Guild, the Walking Tour highlights the very best our city offers. Art Mannho, president of the guild, says that all of the art pieces are right under our feet. “Chestermere has a world class collection of man hole covers, no two are alike!” said Dean, pointing along Chestermere BLVD. “People come from far and wide to see if they can spot the unique differences in each one!”
Under the Municipal Arts Program, Chestermere has received $750,000 in grants to commission the unique manhole covers. Each one is subtly different from the next.
The Chestermere Manhole Cover Tour is a self guided 6-hour tour which tells the history of Chestermere through beautiful Manhole covers.
Families are encouraged to get out and get up close to the art. They can follow a printed map or listen to the audio tour. Mannho says that their night viewing program has become their most popular, “But we recommend families don reflective vests if they’re planning on going out into traffic at night to see the Manhole covers. Always designate a spotter who can stop traffic for you.”
Art Mannho encouraged all residents of Chestermere to get out and see all 1400 manhole covers, “It actually makes for a very special time with loved ones!
