Two East Lake School grade six students raised awareness and funds for cancer research.
Emma and Chloe had a goal of raising $200 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, however, the students exceeded their goal, and raised $1,817 in less than two weeks.
“As grade sixes, we couldn’t do much. We thought there must be a way that we could do something,” Emma and Chloe said.
“Even though there aren’t many things we can do to help, one thing we can do is donate to cancer research to help find a way in getting a cure. Every dollar makes a difference,” Chloe said.
To raise awareness for cancer research, the students made a presentation for grades four, five, and six students stating the facts on cancer, what it is, who it affects, and why it’s important to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
“We decided to take initiative after losing both our grandpas to cancer in 2020. After that, we both talked and we decided we wanted to help everyone who was either facing cancer or family members who suffered the same way we did,” Emma and Chloe said.
Adding, “While doing our project we discovered that so many students here at our school had suffered as we did. It was hard to see our own family passing, so we needed to take action as soon as possible.”
The students are hopeful to keep the fundraiser going, by making this an annual fundraiser for the East Lake School.
“We registered with the Alberta cancer foundation and all of our funds went directly to them. The Alberta Cancer Foundation is a great place to donate to cancer,” Emma and Chloe said.
Adding, “Our funds are going specifically to cancer prevention and screening so that we can make a difference before it’s too late.”
