Beginning in 2012, the Chestermere Whitecappers Quilting Group has been dedicated to creating quilts for the purpose of donating the finished items to individuals and groups in need in Chestermere and the surrounding area. With some initial grant money, new sewing machines were purchased to help the group get started. The Chestermere Rotary Club has given the Quilters grants in the past years, of which the Quilters are much appreciative of, to help with expenses such as batting and accessories needed. The group also enjoys socializing and learning from each other. New members are most welcome. If you have an interest in joining a new group in Chestermere, can sew a straight line, have time to contribute your effort, and enjoy getting to know other members of the community, the Whitecappers Quilting Group may be the venue for you.
Chestermere Community Services is a strong focus for donating by the group, but other organizations and groups are included and to mention only a few: Sheriff King Womens’ Shelter, Colonel Belcher Senior’s Residences, Children’s Hospital, Forest Lawn Seniors Home, Calgary Drop In Centre, Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army Agape Hospice and Unwed Mothers Home. The group donates approximately 50 quilts a year to the charities.
Although the group receives financial grants from time to time, the actual materials used to make the quilts are donated to the Whitecappers Quilting Group. Group members take care in employing as many of the donations into the design and final products as possible. In short, they are always seeking donations connected to their art. Material donations can be dropped off to the Whitecapper facility.
Other members of the Whitecappers and community that knit and crochet, drop their knitted and crocheted items off to the quilters to be included in their quilt donations to the charities and the Whitecapper Quilter’s group are very appreciative of their efforts.
The Quilting Group meets Thursday mornings at 9:00 am and consist of 6 ladies, Gail, Susie, Lorraine, Bonna, Sheron and Carol. Three of the members are snow birds, so only meet half of the year. The group would like to invite new members to join us. Feel free to drop in, meet the group and get started on a new life journey. All sewing machines, supplies, accessories and material are provided.
