A Chestermere Peace Officer stopped a vehicle travelling more than 200 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
On April 29, the peace officer was monitoring traffic on Range Road 284 on the western edge of Chestermere.
A small vehicle was observed travelling northbound at a high rate of speed, and recklessly passing other northbound vehicles with disregard for the safety of others, a Chestermere media release said.
The peace officer’s vehicle RADAR indicated that the small vehicle reached a speed of 205 km/h, and locked in the vehicle’s speed at 199 km/h.
The driver, a Calgary man, did stop without incident, and was arrested, saying he was testing out his new exhaust system.
He is now facing several charges under the Traffic Safety Act and will appear in Strathmore Provincial Court in July.
This incident highlights Chestermere’s Peace Officers commitment to traffic safety, and their continued efforts to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths in Chestermere, the release said.
“Travelling at these speeds is outrageous, it not only shows the wanton disregard for their own safety but other members of the public. This could have ended so tragically in a split second for someone who was just heading home on a Friday afternoon,” Peace Officer Sgt. Trever Bowman said.
