Congratulations to the Chestermere Lakers Senior Girl’s on their second place finish at the Rocky View League Championships on the weekend. The team earned their spot in the final with a 54-46 come from behind win over the Cochrane Cobras. This was a very physical matchup; the Lakers lost starter, Holly Russell, at the end of the first quarter due to a knee injury so the team had to step up to gut out the win. In the championship game, the Lakers were up against the undefeated W.H. Croxford Cavaliers, a talented and hard working squad. A slow start dug a hole for the Lakers that they could not climb out of. The girls worked very hard and played as a team but could not match the relentless Cavaliers suffering a 67-47 loss. Although disappointed with the loss, the Lakers were pleased that the game was closer than the first time they played them. In December, in the Lakers’ first league game they lost 78-40 to Croxford. The team should be happy with their effort and the improvement the have shown thought their season.
The Lakers now turn their focus on to the South Central 4A Zone Championships. The team hosts Bert Church on Monday in the 4/5 play in game. With a win the girls will travel to Okotoks to play the #1 ranked Foothills Composite Falcons. With a win the girls play in the championship game. A loss will put them in the third place game. The winner of the zone tournament will compete in Provincials the following weekend.
Prior to the Bert Church game the eight graduating seniors will be honoured with flowers and a special gift.
