On Thursday morning a third collision occurred on the Rainbow Road and Highway 1 intersection, less than two months after city council reopened the roadway.
On Feb. 10, before 8 a.m., Chestermere RCMP, and fire, were called to a collision involving an SUV and car.
The SUV was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 when a northbound car struck the passenger side of the SUV.
There were no injuries. The SUV had one adult, and three children and the car had one adult, and one child.
RCMP are still investigating the cause of the collision and why a northbound vehicle struck an eastbound vehicle.
One lane was blocked on the eastbound lane while RCMP dealt with the vehicles and tow trucks, and the westbound turning lane was temporarily blocked.
In December, the new council requested city administration reopen Rainbow Road north to traffic, despite city administration’s warnings.
Council requested that city administration place traffic counters at the north and south ends of Rainbow Road north to monitor the traffic and road conditions.
Community operations installed two traffic counters, that collected traffic data between Jan. 7 and Jan. 27. During the time period, normal maintenance was required on the road, a Feb. 8 Committee of the Whole report said.
The first week the road opened a total of 461 vehicles were counted travelling in both directors each day, 1,038 were counted in the second week, 1,164 in the third week, and 1,267 in the fourth week.
The peak traffic periods were measured between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
