The Canadian Gypsum Company (CGC) is constructing a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Wheatland County, aiming to strengthen its presence in Western Canada and better serve the Calgary region. This $210 million investment is set to create approximately 100 full-time jobs and significantly enhance the supply of building materials to local markets.
On November 7, a community presentation was held at the Strathmore Centre, attracting around 50 residents interested in learning about the new facility and potential employment opportunities. Attendees were encouraged to submit resumes in anticipation of the plant’s opening.
“The Wheatland County site offers excellent access to our customers,” stated Duane VanDuuren, manager of the Wheatland facility. “We have a robust network across Western Canada, particularly in the Calgary area.”
Located just off highway 24 near Carseland, the plant will produce gypsum wallboard products, interior finishing materials, and suspended acoustical ceilings. Construction commenced in May 2024, with the first phase of hiring scheduled for mid-2025. The facility is expected to become operational by spring 2026.
“It’s a great environment for us,” VanDuuren added. “Being in a smaller community allows us to connect with the surrounding areas, which is essential for thriving through local talent.”
To further engage with the community and provide information about the project, CGC has planned additional sessions:
November 26: Information session in Langdon.
December 3: Virtual session accessible to a broader audience.
CGC, a leading manufacturer of building materials, supplies products to approximately half of all homes in Canada. The Wheatland County plant marks the company’s first manufacturing facility in Western Canada, underscoring its commitment to the region.
The strategic location near Calgary is expected to streamline distribution channels, ensuring timely delivery of materials to meet the growing demands of the local construction industry. This development aligns with CGC’s goal to provide high-quality building materials while fostering economic growth in the communities it serves.
