CPKC Holiday Train Set to Light Up Chestermere Region This December

Annual festive tradition rolls into southern Alberta to support local food banks

Chestermere residents, mark your calendars! The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Holiday Train is gearing up for its annual cross-country journey, bringing festive cheer and supporting local food banks across Canada and the United States. This year, the brightly lit train will make its way through southern Alberta, with stops that are sure to delight families and train enthusiasts alike.
The CPKC Holiday Train has been a beloved tradition since its inception in 1999. Decorated with thousands of LED lights and featuring live musical performances, the train travels over 20,000 miles through Canada and the U.S., spreading holiday spirit and raising awareness and funds for local food banks. Over the years, the initiative has collected millions of dollars and pounds of food for communities in need.
Keith Creel, President and CEO of CPKC, expressed the company’s commitment to making a positive impact. “The Holiday Train is our way of bringing communities together to celebrate the season while also supporting those who need it most,” he said in a recent press release.
While the train won’t be making a direct stop in Chestermere, residents have convenient options to catch the spectacle nearby. The Holiday Train is scheduled to be in Calgary at the Anderson C-Train Station between 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on December 14th. This stop will feature live performances by well-known artists, providing entertainment for all ages.
For those willing to venture a bit further, the train will also make stops in other southern Alberta locations:
Airdrie: December 14th at 5:00 p.m.
Okotoks: December 15th at 12:00 p.m.
Blackie: December 15th at 2:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or monetary donations, all of which will go directly to local food banks in each community.
The Holiday Train event is free to attend and promises a memorable experience. As the train rolls in, its vibrant lights illuminate the night sky, creating a festive atmosphere. Once the train is stationary, a stage door lowers to reveal live musical performances. Past artists have included the likes of Sheryl Crow, Dallas Smith, and The Trews.
This year’s lineup features a mix of Canadian talent, with performances by Tenille Townes, Aysanabee, and Lindsay Ell at various stops. Attendees can check the official CPKC Holiday Train schedule online for specific artist appearances.
The core mission of the Holiday Train is to combat hunger during the holiday season. With the rising cost of living and increased demand on food banks, community support is more important than ever.
The Calgary Food Bank has noted a significant uptick in usage over the past year. James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank, emphasized the impact of the Holiday Train. “Events like this not only raise crucial funds and food donations but also bring awareness to the challenges many in our community face,” he stated.
Chestermere residents attending the event are encouraged to contribute generously. Even small donations can make a significant difference for families struggling to put food on the table.

Tips for Attending
Arrive Early: Given the popularity of the event, arriving ahead of time ensures a good viewing spot.
Dress Warmly: December temperatures can be quite cold. Bundle up in layers to stay comfortable throughout the event.
Bring Donations: Non-perishable food items or cash donations are welcomed. Consider items high in protein like canned meats, beans, or peanut butter.
Plan Your Route: With potential traffic congestion, plan your travel route and consider using public transportation if possible.

As the train continues its journey across the continent, the hope is that it will inspire generosity and kindness. Chestermere residents have the opportunity to be part of this heartwarming event, contributing to a cause that directly benefits their community.
