Special Air Quality Alert Issued for Chestermere Region Due to Wildfire Smoke

Environment Canada warns of poor air quality and reduced visibility in Chestermere and surrounding areas as smoke from northeastern BC wildfires drifts into the region.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Chestermere and several nearby communities, including Strathmore, Brooks, and Calgary, as smoke from wildfires burning in northeastern British Columbia significantly deteriorates air quality and visibility across the region.
According to the weather agency, the dense smoke not only obscures the sky but poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups. “Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations,” noted a spokesperson from Environment Canada in a recent release. The agency emphasizes the importance of the public taking necessary precautions to minimize exposure to the smoke.
Residents of Chestermere and the affected areas are likely to experience some relief from the smoky conditions starting Sunday night as the air quality is expected to improve across much of the province. However, in northwestern Alberta, the situation may persist until Monday or possibly into Tuesday, continuing to impact air conditions and visibility.
Health officials are advising that people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant individuals, and those whose occupations require them to work outdoors take extra precautions. The smoke can exacerbate health issues for these high-risk groups, potentially leading to more severe health consequences.
Environment Canada and health authorities recommend staying indoors as much as possible, keeping windows and doors closed, and using air purifiers to reduce indoor smoke levels. Residents are also advised to limit physical outdoor activity until the air quality improves.
Local health services are on alert to assist those who may be adversely affected by the current conditions and to provide support and guidance on how to safely navigate this environmental health issue.
As the community braces for a smoky start to the week, updates and further advisories will be issued by Environment Canada, keeping the public informed of any changes to the air quality levels and visibility in Chestermere and surrounding regions.
