Alberta Invests in Rocky View Schools to Expand Learning Spaces

New High School in Chelsea to Ease Overcrowding, Enhance Quality Education

In a significant boost to the region’s education infrastructure, the Alberta government has announced planning funding to Rocky View Schools (RVS) for several capital school projects, including a new high school in the Chestermere community of Chelsea. This investment comes as a vital step to address growing enrollment pressures and to ensure that students continue to have access to quality learning environments.
The funding is part of a broader initiative aimed at relieving space constraints in some of the most overcrowded schools in the district. RVS, which welcomes between 500 to 1,000 new students each year, views these projects as essential for accommodating the community’s expanding population and maintaining high standards of education. “This announcement brings RVS to a total of seven new school approvals in just over a year,” noted a spokesperson from the division, emphasizing that the new projects will help address a longstanding backlog of capital project approvals.
Board Chair Fiona Gilbert expressed her gratitude for the Alberta government’s commitment to investing in education. “The Board of Trustees is grateful to the government of Alberta for its continued investment in education and new learning spaces for students in our growing communities,” she said. “Once built, these additional schools in Airdrie and Chestermere will help relieve space pressures in some of our most overcrowded schools. Every step toward opening a new school in RVS is cause for celebration.”
The new high school in Chelsea is designed to provide a modern learning environment equipped with up-to-date facilities that cater to the diverse needs of today’s students. With an anticipated enrollment that reflects the rapid demographic changes in the area, the project is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the district’s ongoing mission to deliver quality education. The facility will incorporate state-of-the-art classrooms, specialized learning spaces, and technology centers to foster innovative teaching methods and collaborative learning.
In addition to the Chestermere project, the funding package includes support for a Kindergarten to Grade 9 school in the community of Lanark, Airdrie. This further underscores the province’s comprehensive strategy to expand and modernize educational infrastructure across the region, ensuring that every new student finds a welcoming and well-equipped space for learning.
The announcement has generated optimism among local parents and educators who see the new school projects as pivotal in reducing class sizes and improving the overall quality of education. With the rising number of students every year, these initiatives are not just a response to immediate needs but also a forward-looking strategy to accommodate future growth.
Residents are encouraged to follow further updates on the progress of these projects through the Rocky View Schools website and local news channels, as the district moves ahead with detailed planning and eventual construction of these much-needed facilities.
