In a spirited celebration of Earth Day, the Chestermere Public Library is spearheading an environmental initiative designed to bring the community together and enhance the natural beauty of our city. On April 27, locals are invited to participate in the third annual Clean Up the Lake Initiative, an event that has quickly become a beloved tradition in Chestermere.
The initiative, hosted at John Peake Park and the library’s adjacent parking lot, offers residents an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and contribute to a cleaner, greener community. “The big thing is trying to teach people how to clean after themselves, environmentalism, and the conservation of the environment and resources we have,” explained Spencer McDonald, the library’s marketing and social media coordinator. “We’re on a lake-view property, and we should really be teaching people how to take care of it.”
Chestermere, known for its close-knit community and picturesque landscapes, has seen increasing environmental awareness among its residents in recent years. The library’s initiative builds on that momentum, reinforcing the importance of community action. Previous events have shown promising results; in 2023, about 50 people gathered to collect enough garbage to fill 18 bags. Although the turnout was slightly lower the following year, volunteers managed to collect 20 bags of waste, a sign that quality can sometimes outweigh quantity. “If we can get up to at least 22 or 23 bags, we’ll be quite happy with that result,” added McDonald, highlighting the event’s focus on tangible outcomes.
The event is free and open to individuals of all ages, ensuring that every member of the community can get involved regardless of background or schedule. No prior registration is required, and the library generously provides all necessary supplies—free bags, gloves, and garbage pickers—to ensure that every volunteer is well-equipped for the task at hand.
Beyond the immediate benefit of a cleaner park and library area, the Clean Up the Lake Initiative serves as a vital educational tool. By engaging residents in hands-on environmental stewardship, the program emphasizes the broader importance of respecting natural spaces and acting as responsible custodians of the local ecosystem. The library, a hub of community information and resources in Chestermere, has long recognized its role in promoting civic responsibility. This event further solidifies that commitment, linking community pride with the global mission of sustainability and conservation.
As Chestermere continues to grow, events like this one remind us that protecting our local environment remains a top priority. The Clean Up the Lake Initiative not only beautifies our surroundings but also cultivates a spirit of community collaboration and environmental mindfulness—an essential ingredient for a thriving, sustainable future in Chestermere.
Residents interested in joining this effort should mark their calendars for April 27, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and look forward to a rewarding afternoon that celebrates community spirit and environmental care.
